Lao and Cambodian troops have since February confronted one another at key crossings and military outposts that dot the two Southeast Asian nations’ 224-kilometer border in what was viewed as a mild escalation of a long-time dispute.

Lao soldiers occupying an area south of the Sekong River claimed by both Laos and Cambodia have pulled back from the disputed zone following a meeting Saturday in which the prime ministers of both countries promised to work to reduce tensions, Cambodian media and other sources said.

Way back in 1994, a Canadian living in Vientiane opened a bakery. Much and More, as it was then called, had two main reasons for existing. One was to produce and supply sandwich bread to surrounding businesses. But its main purpose was to provide jobs for returning refugees, mainly Hmong people being repatriated into Laos.

Time and distance may have separated them, but the similarities and bonds of kinship between ethnic Lao living in India’s Assam state and the people of Laos remain strong. 

Believed to have settled in the region for three and a half centuries, many community members were unable to restrain their tears when they welcomed the Ambassador of Lao PDR to India and Lao Embassy staff to their village for the first time.

Coffee growers counting beans, out of pocket for product

Dao-Heuang Group will seek to repay the money it owes the country’s coffee farmers as soon as possible after the company fell several months behind in payments for the raw beans.

The company now owes farmers a total of 27 billion kip after it paid off significant debts according to the Champassak provincial Industry and Commerce Department.

China-Lao rail gathers steam

LUANG PRABANG, 7 June 2017: A fast rail line from China to Laos will run straight through Luang Prabang, Lao PDR’s famed World Heritage town, when it opens December 2021.

Officials confirmed late last month that the construction of the Laos-China railway is gathering steam as teams bore and drill foundations at 75 tunnel and 167 bridge locations on a route that will stretch 414 km from end-to-end.

Laos to host major volleyball tournaments in 2017

The annual national Minister of Education and Sports' Cup tournament is scheduled to be held in July, while the Asian Vientiane U19 Beach Volleyball Championship is slated for the end of this year.

Twenty workers at a power plant in northern Laos have quit their jobs after managers refused to raise their salaries, offering instead only to help them with the cost of their meals, sources said.

VIENTIANE, LAOS — The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and Laos have an increased their role in the country’s food and nutrition security with a new partnership in research.

The agreement will enable continued conduct of scientific work that will contribute significantly to the development of the country’s rice sector.

Lao PDR’s Ministry of Planning and Investment in its latest report states there are 2,100 tourist sites in Laos that are either attracting tourists, or have the potential to do so.

Lao News Agency reported there are almost 1,200 ecotourism sites, 600 cultural sites and almost 300 historical sites including two World Heritage sites, but most of them lack basic infrastructure such as roads and many of the ecotourism sites are only of value for local tourists.
