Attapeu victims to be compensated USD$59 per family

Ms. Baikham Khathiya, Minister of Labor and Social Welfare, stated that 500,000 kip (approx. USD$59) will be given to each family affected by the Attapeu flood.

Dams of Serendipity

It's serendipitous that at the beginning of July, the UNDP, in collaboration with the EU and the Lao Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, ran a training on Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) as part of its capacity building program to strengthen resilience to disasters and to ensure proper recovery efforts.

The timing and the information in that week long course could not have been more on point, as fast forward to July 24, when the dam in Attapeu collapsed causing a massive flood that affected thousands of people, putting the new training into good use.

VIENTIANE - Three people who were seriously injured when a flash flood hit Sanamxay district, Attapeu province, have died in hospital, bringing the death toll from the disaster to 34 as of August 5.
