ຖາມຫຍັງກໍໄດ້ Ask Anything Series - Birthdays

Laoconnection.com Ask Anything Series imageQuestion:  Do Lao people celebrate birthdays?  And is it appropriate to give a gift?

Answer:  Traditionally, no.  Our parents generation did not celebrate brithdays.  And in our grandparents generation, they often did not even record a person's day of birth in a precise manner.

However, as more and more western cultural events get introduced and absorbed into Laos events such as birthdays, and even Valentine's Day, are being celebrated in Laos.

Nowadays, it's common to see young people celebrate birthdays.  However, there's not as much emphasis on birthday gifts as compared to the west.  Often times, it's more about the gathering of loved ones around celebration and enjoying good food and drink together.  Gifts are optional but certainly not required.
