More than 500 cyclists from Laos and overseas are expected to take part in the "Vientiane Cycling Season 1" event on Sunday.

The race will start at Donnoun village in Lao capital Vientiane's Xaythany district and travel 75 kilometers to finish at Pakkha-nhoung village in Lao central Vientiane province.

Lao Cycling Federation is looking to select the three best male open level cyclists to represent the nation at the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games to be hosted by Malaysia this August, organizers said at a press conference here on Wednesday.

After Season 1, the Vientiane Cycling Season 2 is planned to be held in the future. Through the events, the federation will also select the best young cyclists to compete in the qualifying round of the Asian Youth Cycling Championship this year and the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina in 2018, reported Lao state-run Vientiane Times.

The federation has been cooperating with a cycling team from the Netherlands in training for Lao cyclists ahead of the 29th SEA Games.

Lao best male cyclist Ariya Phounsavath won a gold medal at the 27th SEA Games in Myanmar in 2013 and was placed 23rd at the Asian Games in South Korea in 2014.
