As in all beauty pageants, in order to represent a country, the contestant has to win the right in their home country's competition first.
In 2017, Laos was represented by Thotsaphone Sitphaxay. He went on to the first ever Mister National Universe competition that took place at the Pullman Grande Sukhumvit in Bangkok, Thailand.
Although he did not win the main title, he did win the Media Choice Award. Here was his introduction video.
