Back on January 5 of this year, the Lao Art Museum officially opened. By February, several Lao Youtubers began sharing videos of the newly opened museum. One Youtuber even claimed that the cost of construction cost USD$50M however this has not been official confirmed.
From the parking lot there is a bit of a walk to the museum itself. As you approach the museum, it appears to be 3 contiguous buildings reminiscent of Lao temples. Upon entering the main center hall, you'll be hit with its grandeur.
The museum specializes in wood carvings of decorative arts, panels, and statues. The buildings themselves are art in both the exterior and interior walls being beautifully carved and painted. As part of the artwork, there is also a section of featuring oil paintings.
At the moment there are still parts of the museum that are still being finished but nevertheless they've opened the main areas to visitors.
Some have said this is arguably the largest museum in southeast Asia featuring wood carvings.
Admittedly, the artwork is jaw-dropping and incredible but so is the entrance price. At the time of this writing, the ticket price is 100,000 kip (approx. USD$4.60) for locals and 220,000 kip (approx. USD$10) for foreigners.
By Lao standards, considering that other museums and cultural sites in Laos are typically charge just 20,000-50,000 kip (approx. USD$1-2) to enter, the entrance fee to this museum seems quite high.
However, with the quality and beauty of this museum, some could argue it's worth the price.
This museum has become a must-visit when coming to Vientiane.
